Sanctuary – Pen and Ink Drawings By Owen Smith

Recently I have discovered the art of stippling using a Rotring Rapidograph pen. Using my own photographs for reference, I have been drawing birds that are native to New Zealand. I have always had an interest in wildlife, and am lucky enough to volunteer once a week for a local wildlife sanctuary in Wellington, Zealandia.

The drawings are quite labour intensive, taking between twenty and thirty hours to complete. It’s a great way of switching off, and I find I can sit there for hours at a time drawing. Patience is the key, as it is very tempting to draw a line here and there, or fill a space with colour.

I’m going to create a series of ten different birds – so far I am up to number five which is a drawing of two fantails (native New Zealand birds) foraging for bugs in a dead punga tree trunk. Once complete, I hope to exhibit them and make archive quality prints and cards for sale.

Any comments or critiques would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Owen

  1. Wonderful drawings, Owen. I can’t wait to try this technique myself!
